Wednesday, 03/12/14 - Dirty Dozen Foods To Always Buy Organic...

Quick refreshing lunch today after going over to Austin to meet with our good friend and holistic doc  Nicole Hewitt!  Fresh salad from Whole Foods with some Kale from our garden topped with a pasture raised poached egg and Olive oil vinaigrette!

My husband and I both had a great consultation with our her today while she is visiting here in Austin!  I haven’t seen her in about 7 years!  She’s been spending a lot of time in Central America and said the food there is whole, fresh, plentiful, wonderful and really cheap! Places like Guatemala and Nigeria living near the ocean.  Sounds like a wonderful place to go stay for a few months to heal!   For now though with my family, our Australia Shepherd Titan, there’s no way we’re leaving the states!  At least not until James graduates from college in a few years. After that this may be something we will consider, God willing. So will be diving into some healthy living right here so it’s time for organic gardening!

We both received a much needed adjustment and of course a lot of great advice and encouragement!  There's no one like Nicole!!  Now it’s up to me to take her advice like I did back in 2008!

Ok so she said what I have suspected all along.  All of my issues are related to FOOD as usual!  So here it comes!  She recommended I eliminate sugar, corn, alcohol and pretty much ALL grains!  Oh boy my addictions!  Had a feeling this was coming!    Ouch.. hard pill to swallow and she isn’t going to give me any of those!  She pretty much talked about 'grains' being the real issue for myself and many people.  It's not really about 'gluten free' per say as it is about how grains affect our health.   This goes along with what I've been learning from Dr. Tomas O'Bryan and Dr. David Perlmutter (author of 'Grain Brain').  I highly recommend this book.

She believes this should resolve the issues I’ve been having for about three months now with pain, inflammation, IBS and some fatigue and my thyroid issues are also resolved when eliminating grains.

Check out the Dirty Dozen list every year.  Here’s the list for 2014 -

The following "Dirty Dozen Plus" had the highest pesticide load, making them the most important to buy organic versions - or to grow them organically yourself:

  • Apples
  • Strawberries
  • Grapes
  • Celery
  • Peaches
  • Spinach
  • Sweet bell peppers
  • Nectarines
  • Cucumbers
  • Potatoes
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Hot peppers

Of the fruit and vegetable categories tested, the following "Clean 15" foods had the lowest pesticide load, and consequently are the safest conventionally grown crops to consume from the standpoint of pesticide contamination:

  • Onions
  • Sweet corn
  • Pineapples
  • Avocado
  • Cabbage
  • Sweet peas
  • Asparagus
  • Mangoes
  • Eggplant
  • Kiwi
  • Cantaloupe (domestic)
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Grapefruit
  • Papayas
  • Mushrooms

Use coconut oil as much as possible and the ‘oil pulling’ I’ve been doing is a good thing!  Use unrefined organic Coconut Oil.  A spoonful in mouth and swish around for 20 minutes and spit it out in the trash.  This pulls toxins from the body. I know it sounds gross but I’ve been reading about it online, actually done it twice now and she said it’s great to do.   Google it!    She suggested we buy coconut oil at Costco.  It’s really inexpensive there!

Drink Kombucha  tea!  This will also help in eliminating the alcohol because this tea is fermented and has a fizz to it.  She said buy the original with no extra sugar added.   I made my own many years ago and drank it all the time but haven’t in over 17 years.  So got some today at Whole Foods and it’s on my daily to do regimen!   She suggested I drink just a little at a time at first to introduce it into my system.  It's really good!  Almost like drinking beer!  ha!

Well that's it for now!  Hope these recommendations and suggestions will help you as well to live a healthier, more vibrant, pain free life!

Enjoy the Journey!
